Year of the Horse

Jim Jarmusch:
Year of the Horse (USA, 1997)
108 min. - English
Distributor: Pirkanmaa Film Centre

Year of the Horse is like a match made in heaven: director Jim Jarmusch’s hypnotically rough style reflects the equally rough music of Neil Young & Crazy Horse, creating the right kind of raw beauty. Shot mainly with Super 8, most the material was filmed during the American and European tours of Crazy Horse in 1996, but the film also includes older footage. The inspiration for the music film classic can be found from Jarmusch’s sincere appreciation for Neil Young. This is also visible in the final cut: the film is an admiring tribute to the unbeatable stage charisma of Crazy Horse. Year of the Horse shows how unique and passionate the band’s sound really is. Only Neil Young, Billy Talbot, Poncho Sampedro and Ralph Molina are able to play these songs the way they should be played.

If you’ve never witnessed Neil Young live, we suggest you book a front seat. If you’re one those who’ve already seen the maestro, we hardly need to convince you.
