Drive

Nicolas Winding Refn:
Drive (USA, 2011)
104 min. • English • Finnish subtitles
K-18

Drive resonates the same feelings we had when we saw Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs for the very first time. How can anything be this cool? The super stylish film is a must-see on the big screen, and what better time to witness it than the dark November night, glossy with the cold rain shimmering in the pale lights of the city.

Nicolas Winding Refn was awarded with The Best Director Award at Cannes and since then Drive has been on everyone’s lips. Indeed, the film is a masterpiece of direction. The script is not the most original in the genre, it is a crime film where people get in trouble, retaliate and love – the classical story. However, Refn really succeeds in creating an atmosphere so extraordinarily magnificent that the film rises to a level of its own. Ryan Gosling excels in the main role as the stone-faced everyday hero, the filming is fantastic and the music... well, a large part of the unique ambience of the film is thanks to the soundtrack. In fact, Drive was responsible for bringing some great electro artists such as Kavinsky, Desire, Chromatics and College to people’s attention.
