Beats of Freedom

Leszek Gnoinski, Wojciech Slota:
Beats of Freedom (Poland, 2010)
73 min. - Polish, English - English subtitles
K-13

Beats of Freedom, a Polish film about music born under oppression, won first prize in Oulu’s MusiXine movie competition in the spring of 2011. According to the jury, “Beats of Freedom is an inspiring and important film, with an energetic account of the fall of communism, and the rise of music as a powerful source of creativity to combat oppression. The directors Wojciech Slota and Leszek Gnoinski crafted an impressive film incorporating great use of archival material, sound, music, and new interviews. Reminding us of the recent political events, this film speaks to a contemporary audience regardless of age, or background, and that music can be more than a product. A must-have soundtrack for any music lover.“

Beats of Freedom is a powerful movie; the archival material alone is guaranteed to stir viewer's mind. A few, if any, documentaries have told the story of rock and rebellion under the Soviet Union’s rule in as affecting way as Beats of Freedom does. As the subtitle How to Overthrow a Totalitarian Regime with a Home-made Amplifier suggests, the movie proves that art and music can really change the world. If you’ve lost your faith in music, watch this film.
