Black Power Mixtape is a collection of 16mm film material shot by Swedish reporters between 1967-1975. The film and the archives deal with the African-American civil rights movement and especially its leading figures Stokely Carmichael, Angela Davis, and the founders of the Black Panthers, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale.

Göran Hugo Olsson has skillfully combines different elements into a mixtape unity that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. The original black-and-white footage is accompanied by Ahmir €Questlove€ Thompson€s (The Roots) music and a commentary by Questlove, Talib Kweli, Abiodyn Oyewole (Last Poets) and Erykah Badu, among others.

With its fresh execution, Black Power Mixtape is an immensely interesting addition to the vast amount of literary work about this period of time. The original material, only recently discovered, is so powerful that Olsson could nearly completely leave out the clich©d talking heads from the film. The mix of the old material into the modern day luringly sinks the viewer into the world of the film. Black Power Mixtape does not try to force-feed the viewer any opinions, but instead forces them to contemplate these painful themes from many different points of view.
