Lil' Wayne €The Carter€ begins with the text €every filmmaker should be able to make a film like this during their career€. The director Adam Bhala Lough has a point. The Carter is exceptionally magnificent €“ one of the most successful movies ever made about musicians. The documentary is about, as the name suggests, one of the most popular American hip hop stars, Lil' Wayne. But this is far from a normal autobiographic documentary.

Adam Lough€s film reveals how everything behind the scenes of the music industry is morally degenerated and does this in the same vein as Penelope Spheeris' classic series The Decline of Western Civilization decades ago. Lough€s camera follows Lil' Wayne on his endless tour from one hotel room to the other and from stage to stage. Even though Lough is unable to pin down the restless super star, he manages to reveal an artist and the grotesque reality of the whole of the United States in a very striking way. Lil' Wayne€s world is a very disturbed one. This ex-gangster, raised by the ghetto lost his virginity at age 11, got hit by a bullet and is addicted to a drink called Purple Drank. It is his own combination of cough syrup (containing codeine and promethazine) and Sprite. Because of this drink Lil' Wayne is unable to sleep. Ever. His life consists of zombie-like recording and hanging out intoxicated.

Lil' Wayne €The Carter€ is a disturbing movie experience that will haunt you for a long time. In all its scariness the movie makes you think if this really is the most honest description of the time that we are living in. Five stars - a brilliant movie.

Lil' Wayne €The Carter€ has its Finnish premiere in Rokumentti.
