Rokumentti breaks the silence with its 2026 festival theme

The countdown to Rokumentti has begun with the unveiling of the festival's 2026 theme, unspoken.

Some things are never spoken of. Some stories are buried beneath shame, others beneath fear. Some voices are drowned out by the distortions of power, hatred, or indifference. Silence is not always born from the absence of speech – it can also arise when no one is willing to listen.

Sometimes silence is a way to protect ourselves or those around us. But when it shields injustice, becomes a burden passed from one generation to the next, or rewrites history, who is really being protected? Whose voices are pushed aside? Whose stories never find their audience? And what happens when the silence is finally broken?

This year, Rokumentti shines a light on unspoken experiences and realities that are difficult but necessary to confront. The silence is broken by those whose voices have the power to change the way we see the world.

Rokumentti will take place at Tapio Cinema in Joensuu, Finland, from 11–15 November 2026. Alongside the thematic programme, the festival will once again present a rich selection of must-see music films, timely and thought-provoking films, and outstanding documentary gems from around the world.

The first programme announcements will be released this autumn, when individual screening tickets and festival passes will also go on sale.
