Before Jack Johnson won over the world with his mellow guitar tunes and laid-back summer hits, life revolved around Hawaiian waves and a tight-knit group of friends. Together, they surfed, filmed and travelled the globe chasing swells. Their adventures gave rise to the surf films Thicker Than Water and The September Sessions, with Johnson’s music finding its feet somewhere along the way.

Directed by Emmett Malloy, Jack Johnson: SURFILMUSIC blends rare archive footage with present-day reflections in a story of friendship, creativity and a shared love of the ocean. Surf legends Kelly Slater and Rob Machado join the friends whose adventures helped shape Johnson’s music and outlook on life.
