On the scent of lithium

The orange deserts of Chile’s Atacama and the lush valleys of Serbia’s Jadar lie thousands of kilometres apart. Yet they have one thing in common: lithium deposits – and mining giant Rio Tinto’s plans to extract them.

All We Have Is Us follows two communities fighting to defend their land, waterways and livelihoods amid the expansion of the energy and military industries. As mining operations and ever-expanding lithium extraction ponds spread, local people are forced to defend their mothers’ homelands and confront the cost of actions carried out in the name of the green transition.

Filmed over the course of five years, the documentary confronts the mining company’s polished corporate narrative with the lived experiences of local communities. At the same time, it asks what price biodiversity and local communities are being made to pay for climate policies that rely on battery technologies.
