Mathieu Amalric:
Kiertue / Tournée (France, 2010)
111 min. - French - Finnish subtitles
K-13

On Tour is all about neo-burlesque, a phenomenon that has evoked delight and disapproval around the world since the mid 1990s. The film won Mathieu Almaric the award for best director at the Cannes Film Festival last year. It features some of the most dazzling stars of the contemporary American Burlesque, more or less as themselves.

Mimi Le Meaux, Dirty Martini, Kitten on the Keyes, Julie Atlas Muz and Evie Lovelle – not forgetting Roky Roulette, the only guy in the group – all have their unique styles both on stage and off. The film depicts well the curses of touring life, such as the endless impersonal hotel rooms and conflicts stirring up within the group. On the sunnier flip side is the women’s strong friendship that’s not too easily shaken up.

Although On Tour is pure fantasy, it often feels like a documentary. All the burlesque scenes have been filmed on real tours in front of a real live audience. The overwhelming energy of the performances comes across. Mimi Le Meaux's ecstatic dance with feather fans is, at the very latest, guaranteed to glue the audience to their seats.
