The award-winning director Morgan Neville directed this short documentary on the making of the legendary Iggy and The Stooges album Raw Power. The document has particular value because, despite their considerable cult reputation, very few films have been made about the band. Today Iggy Pop and The Stooges are a part of basic rock ’n’ roll knowledge, but this was not always the case. At the time of recording Raw Power the band faced great difficulties with both attaining fame and the band’s internal chemistry, as becomes apparent from Neville’s film.

David Bowie was hired to mix the album in order to boost their career, but the end result was quite the opposite. The band did not manage to break into the mainstream and following the release of the album they sort of self-destructed. Nevertheless, in the course of years Raw Power became a classic, and tracks such as Search and Destroy and Gimme Danger have inspired countless rock bands all around the world. In the documentary Chrissie Hynde and Henry Rollins, among others, tell what The Stooges has meant for them, and share their thoughts on how Raw Power in particular has influenced their careers.

The most intriguing parts of the film are those where Iggy and his band mates reminisce about the creation process. While they can now laugh at even the most painful memories, after 35 years certain bitterness can still be detected in their voices. In addition to the stock footage of their older shows, Search and Destroy contains material from the new Iggy and The Stooges comeback tour a few years back.
