Exit Through the Gift Shop is a brilliant film. The most praised documentary from last year premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. However, it started to stir up a fuss long before that. From the beginning, the film’s success was shadowed by rumors and dubious pieces of information. Despite all the vagueness around it, Exit Through the Gift Shop received an Oscar nomination at the 2011 Academy Awards.

Exit Through the Gift Shop is directed by Banksy, the most enigmatic artist of our time, whose true identity still remains a secret. He has become one of the icons of street art and people come to admire his works at the public spaces and the galleries of the art elite alike. In Exit Through the Gift Shop Banksy debuts as a director, and the result is just as controversial as his other art. The film tells the story of Thierry Guetta, a Frenchman living in L.A., who films his environment obsessively. Guetta is inspired by street art and Banksy, and decides to become an artist himself. Guetta meets Banksy and after multiple twists and turns, Guetta holds his first exhibition under the pseudonym Mr. Brainwash. The world is about to be changed drastically.

Exit Through the Gift Shop toys with the art world and media in a supreme manner. The authenticity of the story has raised questions and suspicion. Is Mr. Brainwash real? What is Banksy’s role in all this? Who’s fooling who? In this film reality doesn’t matter. The entire setting, starting from Banksy’s graffiti and shuffling between websites, film clips and, eventually, art pieces worth of thousands and thousands of dollars, is put together with such a genius that you can only stare in awe.
