The incredible survival story of a kidnapped Finnish woman

The new documentary Takaisin Valoon (“Back Towards Light”) by the award-winning director Arto Halonen tells the story of Marissa, a 25-year-old victim of human trafficking. Marissa had to face an unimaginable struggle to stay alive, reach safety and ultimately keep hold of her humanity. Despite the gruelling circumstances and cruel fate, Marissa wouldn't let go of the most important thing to her: “Even though they took away my freedom, no one could break my spirit”.

Alternating between documentary and fiction, Takaisin Valoon deals with the dark world of human trafficking but it's also about the painful process of building one’s self anew. Over time and with help, Marissa too has been able to forgive and find her way back towards light by letting go of her anger and bitterness. In addition to Marissa’s story, Halonen’s film is about the cornerstones of humanity and preservation of hope even at the most desperate of times.
