Chiptune kicks ass! Europe in 8 Bits is a documentary film about electronic music that has been created by the modern inventing geniuses who collect their instruments from the landfills and flea markets. This film sends the Commodore-64 generation down the memory lane, and at the same time sheds light on this interesting and lively music genre.

For the Finns, the best known chiptune artist is most likely Huoratron, whose international career started with music created with Gameboy-consoles. Europe in 8 Bits introduces new faces in the 8-bit industry, who create sounds with old consoles. Some artists simply love the sound of the old 8-bits, some also make a statement against the consumerism by using discarded instruments. DIY-spirit is strong in this scene where the laws of music industry don’t seem to apply. Music is shared for free and the creating process is a reward in itself.

Europe in 8 Bits combines interviews from the active members of the scene, live recordings and hilarious clips from the archives. This film, having been screened at multiple festivals, is an entertaining dive into the subculture of electronic music, full of energy drinks, heavy pixels, and lovable tunes!

After the screening, the local chiptune artist of Joensuu, OJJ, will perform in Kerubin Sali venue!
