Dams, power plants, and salmons have been a part of the Finnish social discussion this autumn. Actor and fishing activist, Jasper Pääkkönen, who is also the distributer of DamNation in Finland, is partly to blame. Even Rokumentti festival’s big brother Ilosaarirock festival has gathered money for the preservation of the landlocked salmon, whose future is threatened by hydroelectricity.

DamNation is a beautifully shot environmental documentary, but also a positive example of the power of active citizens. The film tells about the history of United States’ water power, and its recent changes, thanks to brave and persistent activists whose clever non-violent resistance has altered the perception on hydroelectric plants, and caused once mighty dams to be torn down.

Amongst the nihilistic news flood of today, DamNation’s gorgeous pictures of shining rivers are invigorating. The film reminds what an untamed river can offer the human soul and how one can be responsible for their own effects on nature. Although the film was shot in the United States, its arguments are also valid in Finland.

Fishers – you have to see this!
