Born in Chicago is a stirring documentary about the birth of rock and roll. The first generation blues greats of the Mississippi Delta area, such as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Otis Rush and Junior Wells were playing music in the blues clubs of Chicago. Meanwhile, budding, white middle class musicians had a thirst for soulful music; they followed the masters to the ghettoes where they would experience enlightenment during passionate gigs. Born in Chicago is a documentary about the moment when blues crossed the boundaries of colour and class, giving birth to rock and roll.

Chicago was a segregated city in the 1960s and ‘70s, and the Civil Rights movement had only begun. The masters of Delta Blues and their white students deviated from the unwritten rule of segregation when they played music together. While filming Born in Chicago the documentary makers realised the significance of this piece of American history and how important it was to record the stories while their tellers were still alive. In the documentary we hear stories from Bob Dylan, B.B. King, Jack White, Sam Lay and countless other messengers of blues.
